Standard House Tour

Time required: 1.25 hours
Cost: $2.50 per student

Students of all ages are invited to experience eighteenth-century colonial lifestyles and history. Students will explore the lavish public rooms and comfortable family quarters while hearing about the Wilton’s famous visitors, including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and the Marquis de Lafayette. After the tour, elementary grade students jump into the fashions of the day by participating in a colonial clothing and accessories demonstration.

House Tour With Activities

Time required: 2.5 hours.
Cost: $5.00 per student

More Info

In addition to the standard tour (see above), students will participate in (choose one):

  • Outside Games such as colonial lawn games, which can include ‘hoops’, ‘blindman’s bluff’, ‘Graces’, ‘hop, skip and jump’, and ‘lawn bowling’. Weather permitting for outside activities.
  • Hand’s-On Artifact Exploration in which students determine “what?”, “how?”, “why?”, for each historical object while wearing conservators’ gloves
  • Art Activity which may include decorating a floor cloth, making a corn husk doll, decorating a trinket box, making a sachet or pomander, making butter, paper quilling, or creating a paper ‘quilt’.
  • Archeology Dig allows your students to get their hands dirty and be detectives of history. Students will excavate a small site filled with treasures from the past. Students will then use what they found to figure out what was going on at this site hundreds of years ago. Best for small groups. Weather permitting for outside activities.

Scavenger Hunt House Tour

Time required: 1.25 hours.
Cost: $2.50 per student

Students will tour the mansion on a ‘scavenger hunt’ for animals, insects, shapes, colors and patterns. After the tour, students jump into the fashion of the day by participating in a colonial clothing demonstration.

Architectural House Tour

Time required: 1.5 hours
Cost $2.50 per student

Students will tour Wilton House while considering the styles, elements, trends, and Greek and Roman influences of colonial Virginia architecture and decorative arts.

Behind-The-Scenes Tour

(recommended for middle and high school students).
Time required: 2.0 hours
Cost: $2.50 per student

More Info

This specialized tour focuses on conservation and maintenance of a historic house museum. Students will compare the original uses of the basement and the modern uses and access the role of a museum in collecting, preserving and interpreting artifacts. Activities may include evaluating the archaeological study collection, exploring the reproduction collection, and completing an object evaluation.
