STANDARD HOUSE TOUR Students of all ages are invited to experience eighteenth-century colonial lifestyles and history. Students will explore the lavish public rooms and comfortable family quarters while hearing about the Wilton's famous visitors, including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Students of all ages are invited to experience eighteenth-century colonial lifestyles and history. Students will explore the lavish public rooms and comfortable family quarters while hearing about the Wilton's famous visitors, including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Students will tour the mansion on a ‘scavenger hunt’ for animals, insects, shapes, colors and patterns. After the tour, students jump into the fashion of the day by participating in a colonial clothing demonstration. K.1, K.2, K.4, K.5, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 2.1, 2.8 ARCHITECTURAL HOUSE TOUR Students will tour Wilton House while considering the styles, elements, trends, and Greek and Roman influences of colonial Virginia architecture and decorative arts. 3.1, WHI.5, WHI.6
This specialized tour focuses on conservation and maintenance of a historic house museum. Students will compare the original uses of the basement and the modern uses. Students will access the role of a museum in collecting, preserving and interpreting artifacts. Activities may include evaluating the archaeological study collection, exploring the reproduction collection, and completing an object evaluation. OUTREACH PROGRAM This program enables the classroom to experience the treasures of Wilton House without the hassle of a field trip. Addressing the SOL’s, a costumed Museum Educator will present a virtual tour of the museum followed by a question/answer period. Students will explore reproduction artifacts, while wearing gloves as would a conservator. Students will also create a colonial craft (supplies included in fee). AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM A costumed-Educator will come to your school and work with students to reinforce the SOL’s for Virginia Studies and Past and Present through hands-on activities and games. Students will explore reproduction artifacts, create a colonial craft, and play period games (all supplies included in fee).
