To the Best of Our Knowledge: History, Science, and Furnishing Textiles

April 10, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Dancing Textile

Traditionally, curators have relied largely on period graphics to determine what slipcovers, carpets, and window and bed curtains might have looked like as they recreate historic interiors.  Increasingly, scientific investigations–using paint analysis, x-rays, and rare earth magnets– are challenging that approach, with interesting results.  Textile historian Natalie Larson highlights how recent investigations at Mount Vernon, Montpelier, Historic Charleston, and the MFA in Boston, together with new discoveries in museum collections, have influenced the way furnishing textiles are used in historic house museums.
